Starting A Running Routine

If you want to have success with your running hobby (and by success I mean you stick to running at least for a while), you need to develop a running routine.

First of all, I should explain shortly what a running routine means. A running routine means that you create a schedule in which you point out in what time intervals you wanna go for a run. For beginners, as I said in previous articles about running, the high enthusiasm may taint your real sense for running.

You might wanna go for a run every day for 1 hour, but in the beginning phase, that is not realistic and this may create a feeling of hate towards running.

But some will be asking themselves why would I wanna have a routine? Is it this important? Well, let’s talk about routine and self-discipline and what this creates.

About Routine and Self Discipline

If you would search on the internet about what is taking to succeed in life or in any domain you want to start something you will find tons of articles. Even more, you will find a lot of principles, philosophies, life coaches that will talk about numerous things you have to do.

They have different ideas and about what you need to change and adapt, what to do and what to avoid. But all have in common one thing. It is called self-discipline.

Self-discipline means you start a thing and you make a habit from it. You do not give up when hard times are coming and you stick to it. Research for yourself if you do not believe me and look to the most successful persons in every domain. They will all say that they started a business and stick to it until they managed to succeed.

If you have this idea in mind, every time, you cannot fail. Because this idea annihilates failure right from the beginning. The only time you would fail is when you give up to the idea of habit, the idea of self-discipline. If your goal is realistic then self-discipline will be your road to success.

I would like to assure you that in running, every goal can be achieved. The human body is incredible when tested.

Scientists put the self-discipline to the test. A research was done by Duckworth, A., & Seligman, M. (2005). called Self-discipline outdoes IQ in predicting academic performance of adolescents. Psychological Science, 16 (12), 939–944. was testing if students which had a self-discipline in studying would do better than the rest of the students who would study without a routine.

The conclusions of the study showed that the students with self-discipline would easily outperform the students with a lack of self-discipline. You can read more about this study here

I would also like to say something about talent and work, that I just remembered when I read about the study I mentioned above. A talented person will fail very hard against a person without the same gift but is a hard worker and a self-disciplined person. Let me give you another example.

Emil Cioran (1911-1995) was a Romanian philosopher and author. Obviously, his first language was Romanian but he choose to move to France and he had to learn French. Imagine this, with his 0 skills in French, he managed to become one of the finest writers in the French language, teaching French people French.

Do you realize this? And how much dedication and self-discipline it takes? You can search more about this on the internet, it is amazing.

I’m giving you those examples so you can grow and expand your knowledge. If you want some examples in sport, just google Usain Bolt and check his past with his hard work in running to become the fastest man on earth. That takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

Now let’s go back to our idea – starting a running routine. I believe that now you understood why it is important to make a routine running for your hobby. If you decide to run just from time to time it is fine but if you want to be great and in shape you should make a schedule.

How You Make A Running Routine or Program?

Well, first of all, if you are not a professional runner, then you should see what are the main activities in your life.

If you have a job, that might be a little bit more important than your running. Most people have jobs or if you are a student then you have classrooms, so usually, 8 hours in the morning, for most persons are unavailable.

Although there are persons who like to run in the morning, before going to their jobs. This is really good because it will give you a boost for the entire day. Do not believe that you will feel tired, because you will not. Is it in fact like an energy pill for your day.

You should experiment this, try a routine running before going to work and see how that goes for you. If you find that being pleasant and useful then you should make your routine around that time interval.

I run after I finish my work at the office. I go home, I change, eat a banana with some milk and oat cereals and after 30 minutes I go out and run. It is relaxing to run after I finish my work because it relaxes me if I had a tough day.

I finish my work at 17:00 and usually I go for a run at 18:30 or 19:00 for about 45 minutes. This includes running and sometimes walking if I want to admire things or new places.

So, you should see what is your program and see where a running routine fits. If you have a full-time job, a typical 08:00 to 17:00, you should go like me, from 18:30 to 19:30. No more, this should be more than enough for your jogging time.

If you want to run in the mornings, to get fresh air, then you could go for running from 07:00 to 07:30. You should make a route to run from your house in your neighborhood so you can finish your running in front of your home. This way you still have time to take a 5 minutes shower and go to work.

If you find that this is to tight then you also need to learn that preparation is key to success. Not only in running but in everything. If you make your meals and prepare your clothes for a night before then it should not take you more than 10 minutes for everything.

Also, take in consideration traffic. This could be a pain but you know best how to manage this. For me, I could say I was lucky, it takes me 10 minutes in my car to my office.

If you prefer sleeping more, then go for a run after you finish your job so this way you will not get any panic that you would be late.

Make a Starting Schedule and See If It Fits

Do not make a running routine in a very strict way, the first week you should see if this fits you and then you could adjust to the very best. This should be a starting schedule and a final one should appear after 2-3 weeks.

Also, I want you to be very flexible, do not be really strict and get angry if you said you go for a run at 18:30 but you went out of the house at 18:35. As long as you run everything will be fine.

I would also like to point out that if you would search on the internet about running schedule or programs you will find tons of those. But, I do not want you to get into this at the beginning of your running hobby.

All those programs are so overwhelming that will keep you away from running. Take it easy, you just started to run. Do not complicate things with tons of hours and tight schedule about running. Just run as you want in the beginning, I will write more articles about running and more complex programs after you ran a few kilometers in your life.

So, why a running routine is important? It is important because with self-discipline it will help you not to fail. You want to love running and not quitting after the first week. Also keep in mind that through a running routine you want to accomplish self-discipline into running and not achieving any specific distance, speed or time.
